Shop Sustainably at Broad Street Mall

News What's On

At Broad Street Mall, sustainability is at the heart of what we do – from how we manage waste to the products available in our stores. This Green Week 2025, we’re shining a spotlight on all the ways you can shop more sustainably when you visit!

Whether you’re browsing eco-friendly ranges, recycling on-site, or choosing greener travel options, there are plenty of ways to do your bit for the planet during your visit!

Travel the Greener Way
Getting to Broad Street Mall is easier on the planet with Reading Buses’ bio-gas fleet – one of
the UK’s most eco-friendly. With over 58 low-emission buses, they cut CO2 by up to 84% compared to new diesel models and produce fewer pollutants for cleaner air and a smoother ride. These buses run on bio-methane gas made from food waste and cow slurry – turning waste into fuel and helping reduce harmful methane emissions. It’s a cleaner, quieter, and greener way to travel. Next time you visit, leave the car at home and choose a journey that’s better for you and the environment.

Recycling Made Easy
We’re proud to be a zero-landfill shopping centre. That means none of the waste generated on-site ends up in landfill. All waste is carefully sorted into recyclable and non recyclable streams. Recyclable materials go to appropriate recycling plants, while anything else is sent to a local waste-to energy facility. When you visit, help us keep things green by using the correct bins located throughout the centre. Want to know how much we’ve recycled so far this year? Keep an eye out for updates right here.

Don’t Forget Your Bag
Help reduce plastic waste by bringing a reusable shopping bag with you. Forgot one? Pick up
a reusable option at The Works or Poundland.

Recycle Your Make-Up
Instead of binning your used beauty products, drop them off at Superdrug, where they’ll be
recycled responsibly. Speak to a member of staff for more details.

Guilt-Free Beauty & Wellness
Pop into Superdrug or Holland & Barrett to discover a wide selection of eco-conscious products – from plastic-free toiletries to sustainable feminine care items. You’ll also find reusable beauty tools like refillable deodorants, washable cotton pads, and reusable face cloths to help reduce everyday waste.

Too Good to Go: Waste Less, Save More
Want to help cut down on food waste and grab a bargain? Download the Too Good to Go app
and pick up a discounted bag of treats from Greggs at the end of the day (subject to availability).

Free Water Refills
Staying hydrated while you shop? Bring your reusable bottle and pop into Greggs for a free
water refill.

Eco-Friendly Celebrations
Make birthdays and special occasions a little greener by choosing plastic-free cards and
wrapping paper from Card Factory.

Switch to Eco-Cleaning Products
Going green at home is just as important. Look out for eco-friendly cleaning products
available at Poundland and Savers – these often come in biodegradable packaging and are made without harsh chemicals.

Go Organic
Choosing organic products can reduce pollution and help protect local wildlife. Visit Grape
Tree for a range of organic food and health items.

Refill Where You Can
At Grape Tree, sustainability is at the heart of what they do. Many of their items come in compostable or recyclable packaging, aligning with their dedication to environmental
responsibility. To further support sustainability, consider bringing your own reusable containers when
shopping at Grape Tree. This practice helps minimise single-use packaging and contributes to
a greener shopping experience.

Recycled Coffee Cups
Love your daily coffee? Make it more sustainable by picking up a reusable cup from Poundland, then use it at Boswells or Muffin Break for your drinks on the go. It’s a simple switch that helps cut down on single-use waste!

Embrace Frozen
Buying frozen food can help reduce household food waste thanks to its longer shelf life. Head over to Iceland and stock your freezer with quality frozen items. Fun Fact: A 2018 study by Iceland and Manchester Metropolitan University found that families can cut food waste by up to 47.5% by eating more frozen food!

Every small change makes a difference – so thank you for helping us keep Broad Street Mall clean, green, and sustainable!
